Prediction of an ATM LAN Performance

A real extended LAN is re-designed by replacing its FDDI backbone with an ATM LAN compliant with version 1.0 of ATM Forum LAN Emulation standard. The designed ATM LAN is studied through two sets of simulations. The results of the first one, characterized by a load level equal to the one measured on the real network, show that the ATM LAN can support the traffic currently present on the real network. Through the second set of simulations, in which the overall network load is increased (always maintaining the same traffic patterns), the limits of the designed ATM LAN are identified.
